Maths Cafe

        On Wednesday 21st November parents and carers were invited into Whitebeam to see what goes on in our Maths Meeting. This is a daily event where the focus is on mental maths with arithmetic, geometry, algebra, time, patterns, money, problem solving, etc. all being addressed. There followed cups of tea and coffee while the tables were set up for the main lesson. The focus of this was weighing and reading scales as well as estimating and adding.

      Continuing with our topic of Remembrance and following a class story about a wartime evacuee, the children were choosing items they might want to take with them as evacuees. As the total mass could not exceed 1kg there was plenty of weighing to be done. There was a good selection of items including packets of sandwiches, soap, toy cars, skipping ropes, yo-yos, assorted wooden toys, dominoes, books, packs of cards, wax crayons, teddies, etc. - all the sort of things that were around in the 1940s. A running total was kept and thought given to what kind of items could be packed, especially when the maximum weight was nearly reached. One or two groups managed to get it bang on 1kg, well done!

      Thank you to all the families and friends for coming in to join us, we hope you had fun as well as learning something. The children certainly enjoyed showing you their skills!
